Rock/Review Jon Brændsgaard Toft - Brick By Brick
Jon Brændsgaard Toft’s musical career started as soon as he was old enough to fumble around on his dad’s MIDI keyboard in the mid-90’s. While attending the Rudolf Steiner school in Aarhus, he had a brief run-in with the recorder and the violin before settling on the clarinet while also independently taking drum lessons. Over the years, he learned to play guitar, piano, banjo, and various other instruments.
Multiinstrumentalist Jon Brændsgaard Toft's most recent studio album, "Brick By Brick," is a dynamic and varied trip across a broad spectrum of musical genres and literary subjects. Strong, enduring melodies that hold listeners' attention throughout the whole album, together with inventive usage of time signatures and funky rhythms, make this album unique.
With each tune, Toft demonstrates his flexibility as a musician by incorporating layers of bass, drums, percussion, acoustic and electric guitars, and even clarinet. Rich and textured soundscape produced by the thoughtful balancing of different instruments with a few keyboard pieces for extra depth. Intimacy and expansiveness are combined by the multi-part vocal harmonies, which are often composed of two or three voices.
"Brick By Brick" has lyrical diversity commensurate with its musical diversity. In addition to more realistic, daily topics like relationships, the search for inner strength, and naughty cats in the yard, Toft also delves into science fiction ideas like space travel and time travel. The album's blend of relatable and inventive material enables listeners to connect with it on several levels.
The structure of the record requires attention from listeners yet provides them with a distinctive audio experience because of its unusual time signatures and erratic rhythmic transitions. Every song develops upon the one before it, resulting in a seamless but diverse collection of songs that defy genre conventions while adhering to Toft's own sound.
The song "Brick By Brick" is a must-listen for lovers of experimental rock and folk music since it combines a heartfelt narrative with a refreshing technical proficiency.
