Folk/Review Josh Jensen - This Is Where We Landed

Josh Jensen grew up in eastern Washington, raised on the likes of Grand Ole Opry greats Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and Charley Pride. Soon enough he and his cousins were performing for the family, which led naturally enough into forming bands of his own. A trip to the iconic Seattle studio The Dutchman to track a pop-punk record for his band Popular by Association with producer Gary Mula (Damien Jurado) in 2000 marked his first step into the world of professional recording.

The Americana album “This Is Where We Landed” by Josh Jensen is a very intimate and emotionally charged work that examines love, family, grief, and life's journey. Inspired by Jensen's own experiences, particularly his wife's fight with breast cancer, the album is rooted in real narrative. As a result, the songs are really personal, honest, and unvarnished.

Jensen creates nine original songs, along with a remix, that combine folk, country, and soul-infused Americana, drawing inspiration from contemporary storytellers like Lianne La Havas and legendary musicians like The Band. His ability to craft complex storylines while providing melodies that linger long after the song finishes is demonstrated by the album's best tunes, “Birdhouse” and “Dusty Roads and Broken Dreams.” Like turning the pages of an old, well-worn diary, the album's organic music and his warm, rich voice create an ambiance that is both personal and wide.

“This Is Where We Landed” stands out for its emotional authenticity; each song bears the burden of real-life setbacks and victories, giving it a cathartic and realistic listen. Jensen's music speaks to us on a profoundly intimate level, whether he is contemplating love, time, or the struggles that mold us.

“This Is Where We Landed” is a must-listen for lovers of honest songwriting and soulful Americana, demonstrating that music can still be a potent tool for perseverance, introspection, and optimism even in the midst of adversity.
