Rock/Review Monotronic - Sun Song

Since emerging in 2016, Monotronic has maintained its status as a ponderous and provocative enigma. Conceived by guitarist/producer Ramsey Elkholy, Monotronic started as a loose collective of NYC-based musicians. The rotating cast of musicians has shared the stage and recorded with the likes of Joe Jackson, Robert Randolph, Elliot Moss, The Spin Doctors, and Dweezil Zappa, to name a few.

"Sun Song," the most recent single from Monotronic, gives fans a tantalizing taste of their next album Waiting For You, which is scheduled for release in early 2025. The song immediately grabs the listener's attention with its catchy combination of rock sensibility and melodic reflection.

Both the song "Sun Song" and its development process are captivating. The song's lead guitarist, Elkholy, describes how the basic guitar riff—which was influenced by Nirvana's "All Apologies"—was played haphazardly for months until it took on a distinctively Monotronic quality. The song's direction and structure were given when the lines, "I don't want to lose a minute of sleep, lying in bed and wondering what could have been," appeared out of nowhere one morning. The song's growth was spurred by this impromptu lyrical revelation; the majority of the instrumentation was recorded that day, and the lyrics were finished a week later.

"Sun Song" is a perfect example of Monotronic's ability to combine meaningful words with catchy music. The track's reflective and contemplative melody strikes a deep chord, delving into the thoughts and worries that frequently come with restless nights and unrealized potential. The song's tragic conclusion is given by the repeated line "waiting for you" in the outro, which also serves as the title of the future album and embodies its overall message.

"Sun Song," which is accompanied by an eye-catching music video, raises the standard for what fans may anticipate from Waiting For You. An album full of reflective anthems and inventive music is promised by the song's seamless development and unvarnished emotional honesty. "Sun Song" by Monotronic is more than simply a single; it's a potent lead-up to an album that will be released in early 2025.
