Jazz/Review On a Limb - Cut to the Chase

On a Limb formed in 2016, initially as a way for three Cincinnati-based musicians to collectively practice free improvisation. As chemistry quickly developed, they began writing, performing, and recording original music, with their first release, “Glimpse #1,” dropping in November 2018. Pianist Andrew Haug is the primary composer and arranger for the group, writing for the specific musical personalities of bassist Ethan Marsh and drummer Charlie Schefft.

In their most recent release, “Cut to the Chase,” On a Limb provides an abrasive and propulsive groove that embodies both impatience’s frustrations and its rallying cry for action. The track was born during the early days of COVID-19 pandemic, but with a master touch by legendary audio engineer Dave Darlington now it has come to life creating an energetic and catchy vibe that revives the soul.

From the very first notes, “Cut to the Chase” makes its presence felt with a sense of urgency. The driving beat and dynamic instrumentation immediately capture the listener’s attention, preparing him or her for an energetic musical voyage. The smooth amalgam of diverse components presents a sonic terrain that is contemporary as well, yet classic enough to ensure universal audience.

The catchy groove of the track is a proof that On a Limb can produce music not only works emotionally but also makes people dance. The contagious energy is so obvious that one cannot fight the urge to be swept away by rhythm. This characteristic dynamism is a feature of the sound which this band produces, and it glows in “Cut to the Chase”.

The song tackles feelings of frustration and impatience, especially when no action is taken. The phrase “Cut to the Chase” is an appeal for directness and immediate action in furtherance of public good. These sentiments are tactfully sewn into the music and thus add a touch of reality to it.

The production of “Cut to the Chase” is very well-produced under Dave Darlington’s expert hand. The balance of all the elements ensures that each element on its own is prominent, yet together they make a powerful whole sound.

Finally, “Cut to the Chase” by On a Limb is an exceptional release that manages to fuse edgy energy with infectious groove. Its catchiness make it one of the most interesting songs in their discography. This track demonstrates the capacity of On a Limb to produce music that captivates not only listener but also stays with him or her.
